A book to make people want to eat sustainable wood

A superb book just published by Oxford University Press, written by Christel LECA on order of PEFC France. Very many illustrations make up this book and perfectly enhances the wood material in its sustainability dimension.

Through some well-chosen examples of use of wood, the concept of sustainable forest management is fully explained. The approach is accessible to all consumers. It is educational, aesthetic and should stoke the desire of consumers for this material to the many virtues.

Read and be read.

The book is priced at € 23.75 with PEFC France or on the electronic auction site FNAC.com in bookstores and of course the price of 25 €.

Symposium: "The wood needs the softwood lumber industry "

The symposium June 19, 2010 through EUROFOREST was a real success: the marquee EUROFOREST proved too small to accommodate the participants. In addition to the 120 seats of many people attend the conference standing. Scores from the world of the forest and wood were present (including the Presidents of UCFF and ETFs).

The conference responds to a query as strong of softwood lumber industry and the forest producers. That's why he was placed under the patronage of the Union of French Forestry Cooperation (UCFF) and the Federation Nationale du Bois (ETFs).
In his introduction, Lawrence DeNormandie, President of FNB, was speaking to both its name and that of Marie de l'Estoile, President of UCFF to highlight the convergence of analysis between the two federations. The lumber industry has grown significantly over the past 10 years from plantation softwood National Forestry Fund (FFN). This resource is appreciated. However, there is a fall of reforestation that endangers the entire timber industry.

The symposium was divided into 3 parts:

1. Market demand and development of coniferous sawmill (Alain Prévosto Animation, Commercial Director of CFBL)
- Philippe SIAT SIAT BRAUN CEO presented the developments in sawmilling companies for 10 years,
needs first volumes processed products, investments.
- PIVETEAU Stone, CEO of the sawmill PIVETEAU Wood presented the evolution of sawing equipment, line
automated sawing, shaping, drying, and planing.
- Jean-Pascal ARCHIMBAUD, CEO of the sawmill ARCHIMBAUD talked about the recovery of related
(granulated mulch ..) and cogeneration.
- Jean-Louis FERRON (Secretary General DOUGLAS FRANCE) showed the development of plantations
Douglas and too low in relation to current industry needs. He also stressed
technical characteristics of Douglas, and in particular with regard to the heartwood.
- Jean-Claude SEVE, MONET SEVE Group CEO insisted on changing markets, cons glued massive wood
reconstituted, CE, changing Markets and corollary qualities of wood
requested by the lumber industry.

2. The state of forest resources (animation Lionel SAY CEO CFBL)
- Ludovic Guinard (FCBA) presented the theoretical difference between a resource and a resource
actually mobilized by a focus on the Limousin, Auvergne , Burgundy.
- Philippe LADEN (CRPF Alsace Lorraine) unveiled the first results on the non-renewal of spruce plantations
small after clearcutting in the Vosges.
- NAUDET Vincent (President of the Union of Nurserymen) showed the plummeting sales of plants
Spruce and Douglas in France for 30 years.
- Michel Moulin (CTO CFBL) introduced innovative techniques of plantation softwood
to reduce the cost of reforestation, including mechanized planting.
- Jean-Charles Bastien has developed three themes:
. Seed orchards to significantly improve the genetic quality of seed
. They provide a wide genetic variety that will be useful in the event of climate change
.
. The cost of improved plant decays very quickly for the forester.

3. The workshop discussion:
This part of the conference has a series of exchanges. Appeared on the stage besides the speakers: Pierre-Olivier Drege (Director General of the National Forestry Office), Mark of USSEL (Owner Limousin forest), Cyrille DUCRET (Group CEO DUCRET), Lionel SAY (CEO of CFBL). Each entrant gave a speech. A set of questions and answers was established with the audience.

Concluding the symposium, it became apparent unanimity of the speakers on the following:
1. Sawmill resinous Much has changed. It is effective today.
2. The building consumes more and more wood. We must address these needs.
3. The mills need wood regularly with small knots. The resource of wood found in
plantations from 1950 to 1990 is scarce because the level of planting is too low.
4. There is an urgent need to relaunch the softwood plantations.

It remains to persuade the government and find ways to be found to motivate owners to act!

A first in France: an observatory in the price of wood sold by the Forestry Cooperatives

Observatory economic price of timber sold by forest cooperatives was developed by the UNION OF FORESTRY FRENCH COOPERATION (UCFF) as part of a project supported by the inter-WOOD FOREST FRANCE.
This project is to establish an economic observatory common timber prices based on different estimates of the key players in the forestry-wood. These actors are bound by an agreement that commits them to deliver figures relating to the price of wood each quarter FRANCE WOOD FOREST.

Under this agreement, the UCFF led the work that allowed him to reach the observatory of prices of wood forestry cooperatives. It is currently the only actor involved in this convention to have developed a tool for that, fully automated and under a set of consistent data.
Beyond the desirability of the proposed FRANCE WOOD FOREST, the UCFF had long wanted to refine the use of information on volumes and prices of wood to enable forest owners to better assess the market price of wood.
Forestry cooperatives, direct contact with forest owners, have been found that they lacked the price benchmarks for the marketing of their timber. The only reference prices of standing timber, mixing nature of the disparate qualities of wood too, was not possible to conduct effective market research or to understand or anticipate changes in different market segments.
Automated extraction of quantitative information of cooperatives and their centralization in the UCFF had already been tested before this project. This automated extraction was made possible because of the homogeneity of the tools developed in most forestry cooperatives, based on a powerful network of exchanges.
Work in connection with the establishment of this observatory have helped systematize these extractions and develop a method to select and process this information in a consistent manner in order to show a meaningful analysis.

Presentation Tool
Observatory economic price of wood sold by forestry cooperatives sheds new light compared to previous price lists price of standing timber: it is not just a compilation of information on timber sales in all shapes and for different purposes, but applies to actual products, the qualities and specific volumes for a particular use (timber, packaging).
work largely complete within the economic observatory is to select, classify and relate the information consistently.
The data collected are based on the sales invoices in Depending on the mode of sale, product and gasoline.

They are then consolidated through a statistical treatment, which provides uniform information, and thus an aggregation of coherent statistical series.
Observatory delivers two economic indicators on each graph: a price index, to track changes in unit price and an indicator of relevance, with the volume of transactions processed (more volumes, the higher the evolution of Prices highlighted is reliable).
data announced by the Economic Observatory are based on a volume Total sold about 5 million m3 annually, which allows the tool to have in such detail.

prospects Observatory
Through economic observatory, forest cooperatives to forest owners intend to give references on market prices, particularly in terms of actual products for various uses. This tool could become a benchmark of the forest-wood.
In this objective, UCFF committed to publish economic data from the observatory every 3 months for that forest owners have a reliable and consistent pricing of timber.
